Apple has reached a tentative collective bargaining agreement with its first unionized store in the United States, located in Towson, Maryland. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ Coalition of Organized Retail Employees, representing the store’s workers, announced that the three-year deal includes a 10% average pay increase and additional benefits for the employees. The agreement, which marks a significant milestone for unionization within the company, is pending approval by the store’s roughly 85 employees, with a vote scheduled for August 6.
The union’s negotiating committee emphasized that the agreement gives their members a voice in their futures and sets a foundation for further gains. This development follows a period of negotiations and a strike authorization by the workers in May, indicating a proactive stance in achieving better working conditions. The Towson store unionized in June 2022, with a second Apple store in Oklahoma City also voting to unionize later that year, although the latter has yet to secure a contract with Apple.
This tentative agreement is part of a broader trend of unionization efforts at major companies, including Amazon, Chipotle, and Starbucks, where workers have sought better wages and working conditions. However, many newly formed unions are still in the process of securing contracts with their employers, highlighting the challenges in translating unionization into tangible workplace improvements.
