Google Play announced late Thursday that it has reinstated TikTok in the U.S. App Store. The company cited President Donald Trump’s commitment to preserve the app with an executive order that postponed the implementation of a ban on the platform.
Apple followed shortly after by restoring the app to the App Store Thursday evening.
The 75-day delay of the ban, which began in January, is to help the Trump administration “determine the appropriate course forward in an orderly way that protects national security while avoiding an abrupt shutdown of a communications platform used by millions of Americans.”
“I have the right to either sell it or close it, and we’ll make that determination,” Trump stated.
Before the official ban begins on April 5, Trump said he wants to find a compromise with ByteDance, even floating the idea of TikTok being jointly owned.
In January, TikTok thanked President Trump for “providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties for providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive,” after the President delayed the platform’s ban.
