The U.S. Transportation Department levied a $4.1 million fine against American Airlines, the federal department announced Monday.
American Airlines reportedly held 43 flights on the tarmac for more than three hours between 2018 and 2021, a violation of decade-old federal rules meant to protect consumers.
According to the airline, the delays in question were caused by “exceptional weather events” rather than operational errors.
This is the largest fine ever issued by the U.S. Transportation Department for tarmac delays.
