At 6 am today, the “largest strike against Amazon in US history” commenced – organized by The International Brotherhood of Teamsters. The strike involves workers at seven Amazon facilities in the US.
The action is aimed at pressuring Amazon regarding its failure to sign a labor agreement on December 15, hitting the company during a critical shopping period.
“If your package is delayed during the holidays, you can blame Amazon’s insatiable greed. We gave Amazon a clear deadline to come to the table and do right by our members. They ignored it,” stated Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. “These greedy executives had every chance to show decency and respect for the people who make their obscene profits possible. Instead, they’ve pushed workers to the limit and now they’re paying the price. This strike is on them.”
So far, the picket lines are in New York City, Atlanta, Southern California, San Francisco, and Illinois – with Amazon workers at other facilities “prepared to join,” the union said.
“Amazon does not respect us and our right to negotiate for better working conditions and wages. We can’t even afford to pay our bills.” stated one Amazon worker.
“Amazon is pushing its workers closer to the picket line by failing to show them the respect they have earned,” O’Brien concluded.
Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents 1.3 million workers in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico.
