Bankrate’s annual list of retirement-friendly states placed Alaska as the worst and Iowa as the best U.S. state to retire in during 2023.
The company’s analysis uses factors like affordability, well-being, weather, crime and health-care quality and cost to determine states’ rankings.
Much of Alaska’s ranking is likely due to its dismal weather reputation, as temperatures regularly reach -50 degrees fahrenheit in Alaska during the winter months.
Meanwhile, New York and California came in behind Alaska as the second and third worst states to retire in on Bankrate’s 2023 list.
