On Tuesday, automaking giants Ford and General Motors announced the layoffs of approximately 500 employees between the two companies.

According to Ford and GM, the layoffs are the result of the United Auto Workers’ strike extension, which was expanded Friday.

Ford reportedly fired 330 workers at its Chicago Stamping Plant and Lima Engine Plant.

Meanwhile, General Motors laid off 164 workers at its stamping plants in Ohio and Indiana.
