The number of businesses in the U.S. incorporating artificial intelligence into its operations is still fairly small but quickly growing, led by information technology firms and in locations such as Colorado and Washington, D.C.
The data comes from a new U.S. Census Bureau report, which noted that many companies still haven’t seen a need for AI at work. The overall use of AI by businesses that production goods and services increased from 3.7% late last year to 5.4% in February. Earlier Census Bureau research predicted it will rise to 6.6% by early this fall. Use of AI in information technology firms topped 18%.
Companies report using AI for marketing tasks, voice recognition, customer service chatbots, and text and data analytics. The researchers also found that most organizations that are using AI tools haven’t laid off employees because of it. Instead, they are expanding compared with other firms and creating new work flows, training workers on how to use AI and buying related services.
Colorado and Washington, D.C., rank at the top states with businesses using AI at 7.4% and 7.2%, respectively. Mississippi firms are the least likely to use AI, with just 1.7% of businesses doing so.
