Four out of every five Americans agree that the country faces a retirement crisis, as sentiment shared in equal measure by Republicans, Democrats and Independants, according to the National Institute on Retirement Security (NISR).
Simultaneously more than half of Republicans, Democrats and Independants are concerned about having financial security in retirement.
“Americans are casting their votes in the 2024 election, and there is deep division on so many important issues. But polarization all but disappears when to comes to Americans’ concerns about their economic security in retirement,” said Dan Doonan, NIRS executive director and report co-author. “This isn’t surprising because the data is overwhelmingly clear that most working Americans, except for those in the top income brackets, are struggling to save enough money for a financially secure retirement.”
Approximately three out of every four Americans feel that debt is getting in the way of saving for retirement and four out of five Americans are worried about nursing care.
A vast majority of Americans want action now to protect retirement benefits, according to the NISR report.
