Alphabet Inc.’s X lab plans to lay off dozens of employees, mainly support staff, according to unnamed sources with knowledge of the restructuring. It will also seek outside investments to support its cutting-edge technological advancements.
The lab has begun participating in more funding discussions with investors, sources say, as it moves toward a new structure that can more easily spin out projects as independent startups.
The move comes as the lab is under increasing pressure to spin promising projects into profits amid cost-cutting efforts by Alphabet.
Already this month, Google has cut hundreds of jobs on other teams like hardware and engineering, and more cuts could be on the way.
