Just one day after California regulators gave robotaxi companies Cruise and Waymo approval to operate driverless taxis round-the-clock in San Francisco, the robotaxis went on to cause a traffic jam in the Bay Area city on Friday.
Thursday’s 3-to-1 approval made history as San Francisco became the first major U.S. city to allow driverless taxis to operate 24-7.
However, up to 10 of Cruise’s robotaxis paused in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood on Friday night, due to what the company cited as cell service issues derived from a local music festival.
The driverless taxi-caused traffic jam reportedly trapped human drivers for at least 15 minutes while the situation was resolved.
