Following a series of collisions in San Francisco, the California Department of Motor Vehicles ordered robotaxi company Cruise to reduce its fleet of automated cars operating in the city by half.
“The DMV is in contact with Cruise and law enforcement officials to determine the facts and requested Cruise to immediately reduce its active fleet of operating vehicles by 50% until the investigation is complete and Cruise takes appropriate corrective actions to improve road safety,” said a department statement released Monday.
The company’s robotaxis were controversially involved in two collisions last week, just days after San Francisco authorities approved Cruise’s 24/7 operations in the metropolis.
Cruise, which is owned by automaking giant General Motors, will now only be allowed to operate 50 driverless cars during the day and a maximum of 150 at night.
