According to International Energy Agency Executive Director Fatih Birol, the demand for fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas will peak before the year 2030.
The rising demand for electric vehicles and renewable energies has driven fossil fuels’ predicted peak closer and closer, said Birol.
“Based only on today’s policy settings by governments worldwide — even without any new climate policies — demand for each of the three fossil fuels is set to hit a peak in the coming years,” wrote Birol in an op-ed.
However, the expected subsequent decline in demand following fossil fuels’ peak is still expected to be too late to stave off global warming at a sufficient level.
