On Tuesday, California regulators approved new initiatives that would allow the filtration of the state’s sewage water into usable drinking water that will later be distributed to Californians’ homes.
The rules adopted by the State Water Resources Control Board will help repurpose the state’s hundreds of millions of gallons of wastewater as California continues to face worsening droughts.
California is expected to spend at least $1 billion on the development of advanced waste treatment facilities to propel the initiative forward.
Likewise, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California has already greenlighted plans to build a $6 billion waste treatment facility in Carson, California, which is set to become the largest water recycling plant in the United States upon completion.
